1. Protect important items first
Set aside documents, photographs, keys, medication, valuables and personal keepsakes. Consult the person responsible for the estate before removing or disposing of anything.
2. Sort belongings by destination
Separate items to keep, sell, donate or remove. Label groups clearly and photograph belongings that need a decision from a family member or estate representative. Confirm acceptance with a donation organization before making plans.
3. Prepare for a cleanout quote
List the rooms and large items involved. Note stairs, access restrictions and items that may require special handling. Ask which items are accepted, how the quote is determined and what schedule is available before authorizing removal.
